Adult Sunday School – January through March

On Sunday January 9, we begin a new DVD Series entitled: First Light – Jesus and the Kingdom of God, with scholars John Dominic Crossin and Marcus Borg on location throughout Galilee and Jerusalem.  Come to the Lukens Lounge following worship and have some refreshments in Fellowship Hall, and join in this special class.  Presenter will be Jim Kersey.

Description:

Why did Jesus happen when he happened? Why the confluence of the Baptism movement of John and the Kingdom movement of Jesus? Why the tiny villages around the Lake? Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there?

Why were the titles of Caesar Augustus — Divine, Son of God, God from God, Lord, Redeemer, Liberator, and Savior of the World — taken from a Roman emperor on the Palatine hill and given to a Jewish peasant on the Palestine plain? Was it low lampoon or high treason? Either way, the Romans were not laughing.

What were the priorities of Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom? How was the status quo of Roman imperial theology subverted by this obscure Galilean whose message continues to indict empire today?

First Light is a 12-session DVD and web-based study of the historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God with two of the world’s leading Jesus scholars on location throughout the Galilee and Jerusalem.

Adult Sunday School for October

Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White

During the month of October the Adult Class will meet in the Lukens Lounge following worship at 11:30 a.m. Enjoy some refreshments in Fellowship Hall, and then join us in the lounge for a time of spiritual enrichment and study.

Description

Everyone agrees that America is polarized, with ever-hardening positions held by people less and less willing to listen to one another. No one agrees on what to do about it. One solution that hasn’t yet been tried, says Adam Hamilton, is for thinking persons of faith to model for the rest of the country a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us.

Offering insights first outlined in his book, Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White, now comes a video resource featuring Adam Hamilton teaching these concepts on DVD for group or individual study.

This 5 session video study will feature:

  • Oct 3 – Where Faith and Politics Meet
  • Oct 10 – Christ, Christians and Culture Wars
  • Oct 17 – How Should We Live? The Ethics of Jesus
  • Oct 24 – Spiritual Maturity and Seeing Gray
  • Oct 31 – What Would Jesus Say to America?

Adam Hamilton is pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, one of the country’s most dynamic and distinctive congregations. He is the author of several books, including Confronting the Controversies: Biblical Perspectives on Tough Issues and Making Love Last a Lifetime, also published by Abingdon Press.

Enough – Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity

By Adam Hamilton

Publisher’s Description:

Money has great power in our lives. Used wisely, it is one key to accomplishing our goals, providing for our needs, and fulfilling our life purpose. In recent years, many of us ignored the wisdom of the past when it came to managing and spending our money. Credit card debt soared, savings rates plummeted, and our home equity became something to be tapped into and spent rather than a source of security in retirement. We felt an insatiable desire for more. And we found ourselves spending tomorrow’s money today in order to have what we hoped would satisfy. The result of all of this was not greater happiness and satisfaction, but greater stress and anxiety.

Enough is an invitation to rediscover the Bible’s wisdom when it comes to prudent financial practices. In these pages are found the keys to experiencing contentment, overcoming fear, and discovering joy through simplicity and generosity. This book could change your life, by changing your relationship with money.

November 1, 15, 22 and 29
